We totally love the news. 30-year-old ‘social media-AList-fashion-royalty-designer-kid’ Olivier Rousteing, the man behind the Parisian label Balmain, teams up with NikeLab for a black gold everything Soccer-Themed Athleisure Collection: NikeLab x Olivier Rousteing, Football Nouveau. All that glitters really is gold.
Athleisure goes luxe with Olivier Rousteing as NikeLab, the force behind Nike’s innovative and high-end collections, and Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing have revealed a spectacular collaboration, structured and sophisticated chic, just like Rousteing signatures designs. “Fashion is usually about the catwalk and the glamour, but with Nike it was about performance and the athletes,” said Rousteing. Rousteing is known for his embroidered runway pieces and for being the unofficial designer of the Kardashian family dressing them in every red carpet and even designing custom outfits for all of them to wear at Kanye’s Yeezy Season 3 show: BalmainxYeezy. But we couldn’t be more excited with ‘the man’ bringing us athleisure alongside with the world’s leading force in sports. Sports are definitely played with style.
“What I love about this collection is that we are integrating the iconic style of football into sport style,” said Rousteing, as he has taken inspiration from Nike’s archives and his own childhood love of soccer adding his signature ‘glittery luxe’ with gold accents to a sleek black silhouette. In Rousteing own words, “Black is timeless, and gold is for victory.”
“Olivier was obsessed with the complete look, making sure each piece worked together -not just within the men’s and women’s collections, but also between the two,” said Jarrett Reynolds, NikeLab Senior Apparel Design Director. “At every design review, he’d ask, ‘Would a football player wear that?’ That question helped keep the collection rooted in sport.”
The collaboration also features footwear with the coolest high-top sneakers and more traditional sneaker silhouettes in black and gold, featuring models inspired by existing Nike designs.
The Balmain Creative Director won’t be the first designer to work with the sportswear giant on an exclusive high-fashion collection: he is the fourth after Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci, Kim Jones, and Jun Takahashi. And this collaboration follows a head-turning pieces collection with H&M back in 2015 that sold in minutes.
Rousteing has announced the collection with NikeLab on his Instagram account, which boasts more than three million followers, uploading as well a NikeLab x Olivier Rousteign photoshoot for Dazed Magazine photographed by Nick Knight and styled by Robbie Spencer featuring Cristiano Ronaldo:
